My friend, the great YA author and gorgeous human being Mal Peet, died yesterday. All of his books are wonderful, but I’d particularly recommend Life: An Exploded Diagram as one of the very greatest YA novels ever. Feeling very, very sad today.

God, I hate YA books that are lessons rather than a story. Do-goodery is death to art. Just tell your truth, ALL the lessons will be there.

Also, “Your truth” doesn’t mean it has to be a Throbbing Story of Great Purpose. Truth can be ridiculously fun and fast, too.
